Stillingsbeskrivelse
At Biosort, we develop cutting-edge solutions that combine machine vision, robotics, and biometric data to enable individual treatment and monitoring of farmed fish. Our products are installed underwater in salmon cages and contribute to improved fish welfare, increased sustainability, and lower production costs for fish farmers.
We are now strengthening our product development team with an experienced Mechanical Engineer who can design robust electro-mechanical modules for marine environments, take prototypes through testing, and prepare them for reliable volume production. If you love solving hard engineering problems and want your work to have real-world impact in the ocean, this is the role for you.
What you’ll do
• Design electro-mechanical products with up to 5000 parts and fasteners over 1500 BOM lines , modules and assemblies for underwater use (typically 5-30m depth), including product architecture, structural components, seals, mechanisms and mechanical interfaces.
• Take ownership of designs end-to-end: from early concepts and CAD development → prototype builds → verification testing → design iterations → production-ready solutions.
• Improve and refine existing prototypes by analyzing test data, identifying failure modes, and implementing robust mechanical and electro-mechanical solutions.
• Develop designs suitable for volume production (≈1000 units/year), including materials, manufacturing methods, tolerance chains, sealing concepts, cable management, and assembly processes.
• Collaborate closely with electronics, optics, software, and production engineers to ensure product performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
• Support suppliers and manufacturers, review DFM input, and qualify new components and production partners.
• Participate in testing of prototypes in our salt-water pool, in the sea close to Oslo, and in real fish-farm environments along the west coast and in Northern Norway
What we’re looking for
Qualifications
• Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
• 5+ years of experience designing mechanical or electro-mechanical products.
• Show ability to integrate dense mechanical structures with high performance requirements within complex interfaces to outer dimensions and joining modules
• Strong skills in 3D CAD (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, or similar) -- We use Onshape.
• Excellent communication skills regarding mechanical concepts, ability to understand and convey how mechanics function and move in space through speech and paper drawing
• Experience developing products exposed to water, pressure, shocks, vibration, arctic temperature and harsh environments.
• Proven ability to take a prototype through iterative testing into stable, manufacturable design.
• Understanding of materials and production methods such as CNC machining, injection moulding, casting, sheet metal, sealing technologies, cable & connector management, and assembly processes.
• Experience in running and documenting FE analysis of assembly structures under static forces and pressure. Preferably in ANSYS mechanical.
• Ability to create clear and comprehensive engineering documentation: drawings, tolerance analyses, BOMs, assembly instructions.
• Structured, systematic, and comfortable taking ownership of complete assemblies or modules.
• Ability to design and optimize within electromechanical assemblies of up to unique 1500 BOM lines of parts and fasteners
• Creative mindset with a drive to invent, improve and solve real engineering challenges.
• Good communication skills in English; Norwegian is a plus.
Nice to have
• Experience with underwater or marine equipment.
• Knowledge of optical systems, waterproofing, or mechanical integration of electronics.
• Familiarity with testing, failure analysis, or reliability engineering.
• Hands-on workshop experience (prototyping, machining, assembly).
• Experience collaborating with Nordic or international suppliers.
What you’ll enjoy at Biosort
• Work on meaningful technology with direct environmental impact.
• Take part in designing highly specialized underwater systems few companies worldwide work on.
• Join a small, highly skilled, multidisciplinary team where your ideas influence the product.
• Access to our workshop, saltwater test pool, and real-world testing sites.
• Modern office by the water at Fornebu with cantina, café, gym, and grocery store in the building.
• Competitive salary, stock options, and equipment of your choice.
• A culture built on openness, initiative, ownership, and having fun at work.
